Is Thumbtack Worth It? Run the 30-Day Test

Thumbtack is worth it when leads, after refunds, cost less per paid job than a job earns. How billing, refunds and rank work, plus a 30-day test.

Thumbtack is worth it for a pro when the leads you pay for, minus Thumbtack's refunds, turn into enough paid jobs that each job costs less than the profit it leaves. Only a logged test on your own job types answers that, and 30 days of leads, priced and tracked by hand, settles it faster than a review thread can. For how Thumbtack's billing compares with Angi and HomeAdvisor, see the per-job math for Angi; this post stays on Thumbtack alone.

Quick answer

  1. Turn on job preferences for two or three job types, and decide whether to keep smart matching (leads outside those job types) on.
  2. Set a weekly budget you can afford to lose, not the unlimited option.
  3. Log every lead: date, job type, price, reply time, refund, and whether it became a paid job.
  4. Before you start, set the most a lead can cost: your usual close rate times what a job leaves after materials and paid labor. Price each lead under it.
  5. After 30 days, divide each job type's net lead cost by its completed, paid jobs; keep, narrow or drop each by whether that stays under one job's profit.

When does Thumbtack actually charge you?

Thumbtack offers three ways to get work, and each bills differently (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). A lead auto-charges your set price when a customer finds you in search results, contacts you directly, and has a job that matches your job preferences (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). With smart matching on, Thumbtack can also send, and charge you for, leads outside those preferences when its AI predicts a strong fit; you can switch it off on your Services page (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05).

An Opportunity, which Thumbtack also calls an "Open lead," is a customer who has reached out to other pros but not hired anyone yet. Sending a quote is free, you pay the price shown upfront only if the customer responds, and the charge does not come out of your weekly budget (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). Opportunities are not based on your job preferences (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05).

A Preset job is already scheduled by the customer. There is no upfront cost, Thumbtack keeps a percentage of the job price, and you see your take-home pay before you claim it. Thumbtack sends preset jobs to pros who meet its criteria, such as 3 or more reviews from Thumbtack customers, at least a 4.5-star rating and a passed background check (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05), so a newer pro will likely run the test on leads and Opportunities.

Thumbtack aims to make the cost of a lead match "how valuable the job is," which changes with the type and size of the job, how many pros are available, and your market (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). You still pick the number and pay exactly that, and a price at or near Thumbtack's minimum may rise automatically if Thumbtack raises its minimum prices (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05).

What do your job preferences control?

Job preferences, which Thumbtack also calls targeting, cover where you work, when you are available, the types of jobs you want, and your budget. Turning them on makes your business visible in search results, and since matching leads charge automatically, Thumbtack says to double-check job types, travel areas and availability first (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05).

SettingWhat it changesWhat to watch in your log
Job typesWhich jobs a lead can matchLeads for work you actually want
Smart matchingWhether leads outside your job types reach you, and charge youDeclined Smart Match leads and their refunds
Travel areaThe radius or ZIP codes you serveLeads too far to be worth the drive
AvailabilityWhich days you can be matched forLeads for dates you had already blocked off
Lead price per serviceHow competitive you are, and each lead's costNet cost per completed job
Weekly budgetWhat you spend before dropping from search until MondayDays you dropped out of search

Block days off on Thumbtack's calendar, since business hours alone do not stop new leads (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). Hit your budget mid-week and you can raise it right away or wait for Monday's reset; after hitting the limit, you can set a custom amount only one more time that week (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). Thumbtack caps each customer at five pros during the first four hours of a search and lifts the cap after that, so the lead you paid for may be shared with up to four rivals early on, and more later (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05).

When can you get a refund or credit?

Some refunds need no request: Thumbtack refunds any lead its Trust and Safety department flags (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05), and any Smart Match lead you decline with the reason "Not what I do" (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05).

Fair Shot Refunds are the third automatic kind: if a customer replies to none of the pros they contacted within 72 hours of the request, Thumbtack refunds the lead. You qualify only if you accepted the lead and replied within four business hours (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. your local time), your first contact went through Thumbtack's messenger or a Thumbtack number, and you shared no personal phone number or email before the customer's first reply (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). Make the first call from your own cell, or reply more than four business hours later, and that refund is gone.

Everything else needs a request within 45 days of the charge, decided case by case "at our sole discretion." The situations Thumbtack lists as most likely to qualify: the job changed significantly, a customer's first message about an Opportunity is a clear no, the lead breaks Thumbtack's Terms of Use, the customer wants a fixed date you had blocked off, the phone number is invalid, or the same customer sent an identical job twice within 45 days (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). A customer hiring a different pro does not qualify. Approved refunds are credited to your Thumbtack balance, and moving one back to your card means contacting Thumbtack within 10 business days after approval.

Does replying fast change anything?

Thumbtack's advice for a better rank in search results comes down to four things: respond quickly and consistently, collect reviews (rating and review count are factored in), build a profile customers engage with, and set competitive lead prices (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). It also counts reply speed among the things that affect how many leads you get, next to your profile, reviews and local demand (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). To be eligible for the "three best matches" section Thumbtack may show above the results, a pro needs at least a 4.5-star rating, at least three reviews, and an average reply time of four hours or less (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05).

Since reply speed feeds rank, lead volume and Fair Shot Refunds, run the test in weeks when someone can answer new leads within a few hours.

How do you build the 30-day test?

Pick two or three job types, the ones that pay best or that you most want more of, and leave the rest off. Set each lead price under the ceiling from the next section, watching the lead estimate as you move the slider; a higher price makes you more competitive for that service (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). Set the weekly budget at a quarter of what you could lose over the month, at or above Thumbtack's minimum for your services (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-05). Decide on smart matching before day one: switch it off, or leave it on and mark which leads it sent.

For the lead log, a spreadsheet with one row per lead works; keep these columns:

  • Date, job type, and lead, Smart Match lead or Opportunity
  • Price charged
  • Hours until you replied, and whether the first reply went through Thumbtack
  • Refund requested or received, and why
  • Hired or not, and the job's final value

Field service management software can hold the same fields, with the source marked Thumbtack.

What is the most you should pay for a lead?

Set this ceiling before the test, from your own numbers: multiply your close rate (completed, paid jobs divided by leads worked, from phone calls or referrals) by the gross profit an average job of that type leaves after materials and paid labor, with rent and your own time left out. After the test, divide each job type's net lead cost (charges minus refunds) by its completed, paid jobs; that cost per completed job has to stay under the gross profit one job leaves.

Illustrative: the numbers below belong to an imaginary two-person painting company, invented for this example, and not one of them is a client's figure. Interior jobs close at 25% and leave $400 gross profit; exterior jobs also close at 25% but leave $700. That puts the ceiling at $100 for an interior lead (0.25 x $400) and $175 for an exterior one (0.25 x $700), and the company priced well under both.

Interior paintingExterior painting
Lead price set$35$55
Ceiling per lead before the test$100$175
Leads charged1014
Refunds$35 (duplicate lead)$55 (Fair Shot Refund)
Net lead cost$315$715
Completed, paid jobs41
Close rate on Thumbtack40%7%
Net cost per completed job$78.75$715.00
Gross profit per job$400$700

Interior cleared easily: $78.75 per completed job against $400 of profit, leaving 4 x $400 minus $315 = $1,285, so it earns a bigger budget. Exterior's $55 sat far under its $175 ceiling, but that ceiling assumed a 25% close rate, and on Thumbtack 1 of 14 leads closed. At that rate a lead can cost at most $700 ÷ 14 = $50, and the one job left $700 against $715 of lead cost.

One job is too small a sample to judge exterior work for good, so the company turns exterior off, keeps interior running, and may give exterior its own 30 days later. A home service marketing plan runs the same cost-per-completed-job test on search ads, Local Services Ads and postcards.

Which questions should Thumbtack support answer for you?

  • What is the current minimum lead price for each of my job types, and has it changed since I set my prices?
  • Which of my charged leads came through smart matching, and which job preference did each one fall outside?
  • For a lead that went quiet and was not refunded, which Fair Shot Refund condition did it miss?
  • Do my rating, review count and average reply time make me eligible for "three best matches" on my job types?

Frequently asked questions

How much of a fee does Thumbtack charge?

There is no single fee. For leads, you set the exact price you pay per service, and Thumbtack says lead costs vary with the type and size of the job, how many pros are available, and your market. Opportunities show their own price upfront and charge you only if the customer responds. For Preset jobs, Thumbtack keeps a percentage of the job price instead of a lead fee, and you see your exact take-home earnings before you claim one.

Is Thumbtack free to use?

Not if you want leads. To show up in search results you need job preferences turned on, a weekly budget that meets Thumbtack's minimum for your services and a card on file, and from then on every matching lead charges your set price automatically. Sending a quote to an Opportunity is free, and you pay only if the customer responds; Preset jobs carry no upfront cost, since Thumbtack keeps a percentage of the job price instead.

How does Thumbtack work for contractors?

A contractor builds a profile, turns on job preferences (the job types, travel area and availability Thumbtack matches against), and sets a lead price per service and a weekly budget. Customers who see the profile in their search results can contact the contractor directly, which auto-charges the lead price. Opportunities work the other way round: the contractor writes first to a customer who has reached out to other pros, and pays a separate, upfront price only if the customer replies.

What leads qualify for a Thumbtack refund?

Thumbtack refunds automatically when its Trust and Safety team flags a lead or when you decline a Smart Match lead as not a job you do. Its Fair Shot Refunds also come back without a request when a customer replies to no pro within 72 hours, provided you replied within four business hours and kept the first contact on Thumbtack. Everything else needs a request within 45 days of the charge; a significantly changed job, an invalid phone number and a duplicate lead are among the situations Thumbtack says will most likely qualify, and a customer hiring another pro is not.

Does responding quickly actually help on Thumbtack?

Thumbtack says it does: responding quickly and consistently can help your rank in search results, and reply speed is one of the things it says affects how many leads you get, along with your profile, star rating and reviews, and local demand. To be eligible for its "three best matches" section, Thumbtack asks for at least a 4.5-star rating, three reviews, and an average reply time to new customers of four hours or less. A reply within four business hours is also one of the conditions for a Fair Shot Refund.
