Home service marketing pays when a paid invoice can be traced back to the search, call or referral that started the job. Run the channels you can trace that far, and judge each one by completed jobs and collected revenue in your field service software, not by the leads an ad report shows.
Quick answer
- In your field service software (the program that schedules, dispatches and invoices your jobs), make "where did this job come from" a field the CSR (customer service rep, who answers calls and books jobs) must fill, picked from your channels.
- Give trucks, yard signs and mailers each a phone number printed nowhere else, all ringing at the office line.
- Pull last month's completed jobs and collected revenue by source, next to what each source cost.
- Divide each source's cost by its completed jobs, and set that beside what an average job leaves after parts, labor and fuel.
- Before you pay for more calls, count how many rang out after hours last week.
How does a job travel from first call to paid invoice?
Each job passes through four hands, and any of them can drop the record of where it came from.
| Stage | Who handles it | Where it gets written | How the source goes missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| First contact | The customer | Phone log, form inbox, Local Services Ads or marketplace lead list | The customer dials a number off an old invoice or a fridge magnet |
| Booking | CSR or dispatcher | A new job in the field service software | The source field is optional, or "Other" is the default |
| The visit | Technician | Job notes, estimate, photos | The follow-on job, such as a replacement quoted at a repair, opens without a source |
| Payment | Office, or the tech's card reader | Invoice | Revenue sits on the invoice, and no report puts it beside the source |
Fix the second row first. The CSR speaks with each new caller before the job exists, so that is where the source gets picked, before the job can be saved. Everything later inherits it.
Which channels can a home service company trace to a job?
Each of these seven can be tied to completed jobs, as long as something marks its calls.
| Channel | What you pay | What marks its jobs |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile and reviews | Staff time | The CSR's pick; the profile's Performance page as a trend |
| Local Services Ads | A price per valid lead | The account's lead list, matched to jobs by phone number |
| Search ads | A price per click | A Google forwarding number on the ads, and a landing page only the ads link to |
| Lead marketplaces | Each marketplace's own terms | Its lead list, matched by phone number |
| Referrals and repeat customers | Staff time, plus any referral reward | The CSR asks who sent them; customer history shows repeats |
| Trucks and yard signs | Wraps and signs you already bought | A number printed only on them |
| Direct mail | Printing, plus postage per piece | A number printed only on that mailer |
Search ads can show a Google forwarding number, which routes the call to your business while Google records details such as start time and duration (Google, checked 2026-10-04). For mail, USPS Every Door Direct Mail delivers to every address on the routes you choose, addressed to "Postal Customer". USPS lists EDDM Retail postage at $0.26 a piece for flats (flyers, postcards and other flat pieces up to 3.3 oz), and printing comes on top (USPS, checked 2026-10-04). A van or a postcard showing your main number still rings the phone, but nobody can say afterward which one did.
How expensive is a click for a plumber, roofer or exterminator?
Search ads bill per click, and in the estimates below the average CPC (cost per click) runs highest for emergency plumbing and water damage. The figures are Google Ads Keyword Planner estimates for the US, October 2026. They are national averages, so clicks in your area are priced differently and none of this predicts your bill.
| Search | US searches a month | Average CPC |
|---|---|---|
| emergency plumber | 74,000 | $76.38 |
| water damage restoration | 135,000 | $48.57 |
| ac repair near me | 201,000 | $46.82 |
| garage door repair near me | 165,000 | $46.46 |
| plumber near me | 823,000 | $39.45 |
| roof repair near me | 90,500 | $39.02 |
| pest control near me | 165,000 | $32.48 |
| electrician near me | 368,000 | $23.25 |
The same estimates give "emergency plumber" a top-of-page bid range of $24.65 to $114.39. A click at that price earns nothing when the phone rings out, so run the ads only in hours when a person or an answering service picks up. To set a ceiling, multiply what one completed job leaves by completed jobs per click. The result is the most a click can cost. Google Ads for plumbers sorts the emergency, water heater and drain searches by whether they earn it.
What can the free Google listing and reviews do for you?
A Google Business Profile is Google's free company listing on Maps and in local results. Its Performance page counts calls, website clicks, direction requests, bookings and messages, but a call there means a tap on the call button, and the counts include actions that came through Google Ads (Google, checked 2026-10-04). Read it as a monthly trend, and count the listing's jobs by the CSR's pick, never by adding its calls to the ad account's.
Technicians can help with reviews, as long as they stay inside Google's rules. The policy prohibits incentives such as payment, discounts or free services for a review, selectively soliciting positive reviews, asking staff to collect a certain number, and asking staff to solicit reviews with specific content, including content that identifies a staff member (Google, checked 2026-10-04). So no per-tech review targets, and no script asking customers to name the tech. Send the same review link to every customer once the invoice is paid; the link and a QR code image sit in the profile under Read reviews, then Get more reviews (Google, checked 2026-10-04).
Are per-lead channels a better deal than paying per click?
Local Services Ads are Google ads for service companies that bill per lead instead of per click. Google charges for each valid lead, such as a text, a voicemail, an answered phone call, a returned missed call or a booking request, and its list of leads not eligible for credit includes a valid lead received outside your business hours (Google, checked 2026-10-04). Google announced in August 2025 that a single Google Verified badge would replace Google Guaranteed, Google Screened, License Verified by Google and the Money Back Guarantee, starting that October (Google, checked 2026-10-04). What happened to Google Guaranteed covers the badge.
The program is also moving into Google Ads as a Performance Max campaign (a Google Ads campaign type) with pay-per-lead goals; Google says billing stays per valid lead and the ads still show only on Google Search and Maps. Google's planned phases, which are its own estimates, put the first US phase in August 2026 for select advertisers in categories that include plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing and pest control, and a broader group, including service-area businesses without a storefront, in late 2026. After the move the original Local Services Ads dashboard can no longer be opened, and past leads carry over but performance reports do not (Google, checked 2026-10-04). If your account has not moved yet, download or screenshot the reports you want to keep.
Lead marketplaces such as Angi and Thumbtack charge on their own terms, which the Angi math lays out from each company's pages. Judge every per-lead channel by spend divided by completed jobs, since a low price per lead says nothing about how many leads book.
How does the source stay attached to the job?
In the field service software, find the field that records where a customer came from, whatever it is called there, and make it required on every new customer and job. Its pick list holds the channels you run plus "Customer could not say", so the CSR never guesses or skips it. Three rules keep the counts straight:
- A number beats memory. A call to the truck number is a truck job, even when the caller says Google.
- A follow-on job inherits the source. The water heater replacement quoted at a repair visit keeps the repair's source, so the channel that found the customer gets credit for the bigger ticket.
- A repeat customer keeps the first source on the customer record, and the new job gets "Repeat customer". Maintenance-plan visits get a value of their own, so they never pad an ad channel.
Then send outcomes back to the ads. With offline conversion import, Google Ads lets you "measure what happens in the offline world after your ad results in a click or call to your business"; for clicks, you save the Google click id (GCLID, a code Google adds to each ad click) with the lead and return it later with what happened (Google, checked 2026-10-04). Over my two years of media buying, October 2023 to September 2025, I placed nearly $700K across Google Ads and Meta Ads, and an ad account only learned about a sale when someone sent it back. Field service management software has the demo questions, including whether the software can send booked or completed jobs back.
Which sources paid for themselves last month?
Read a month only once the next one is two weeks old, so jobs booked on the 30th have time to be done and paid.
Illustrative: an imaginary four-truck HVAC and plumbing company, with invented figures throughout; nothing here is client data.
| Source, and what set it | Spend | Calls, forms or leads | Booked | Completed | Collected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search ads (forwarding number, ads-only page) | $6,000 | 120 | 54 | 46 | $27,600 |
| Local Services Ads (lead list) | $2,250 | 45 | 27 | 24 | $10,800 |
| Lead marketplace (its lead list) | $1,800 | 60 | 12 | 9 | $3,150 |
| Postcards (their own number) | $2,200 | 14 | 9 | 7 | $3,850 |
| Trucks and yard signs (their own number) | $0 | 8 | 6 | 5 | $2,500 |
| Google listing, unpaid (CSR's pick) | $0 | 50 | 34 | 31 | $15,500 |
| Referral or repeat customer (CSR's pick) | $0 | 40 | 36 | 34 | $20,400 |
| No source picked | 30 | 18 | 15 | $7,500 |
- Booking rate = booked ÷ calls, forms or leads. Search ads: 54 ÷ 120 = 45%. Local Services Ads: 27 ÷ 45 = 60%. Marketplace: 12 ÷ 60 = 20%.
- Cost per completed job = spend ÷ completed. Search ads: $6,000 ÷ 46 = $130. Local Services Ads: $2,250 ÷ 24 = $94. Marketplace: $1,800 ÷ 9 = $200. Postcards: $2,200 ÷ 7 = $314.
- Payback bar = 1 ÷ job margin, where job margin is the share of a collected dollar left after parts, tech pay and fuel. At 40% margin the bar is 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5, and a source clears it when collected ÷ spend is higher. Search ads: $27,600 ÷ $6,000 = 4.6. Local Services Ads: $10,800 ÷ $2,250 = 4.8. Marketplace and postcards: $3,150 ÷ $1,800 and $3,850 ÷ $2,200, both 1.75.
The ad account showed 158 conversions for the search ads that month: $6,000 ÷ 158 = $38 per conversion, against $130 per completed job. Judged by that column, a search job looked like less than a third of what it really cost.
Two rows miss the bar. For the marketplace, the 20% booking rate is a question for the office: who called those leads back, and how soon. Seven postcard jobs are too few to drop the mailer on, since its number can keep ringing next month. And the 30 calls with no source brought in $7,500, more than the marketplace and postcards combined ($7,000), so fixing the source field comes before cutting either.
What should a marketing company put in front of you each month?
- Completed jobs and collected revenue by source, pulled from your field service software, beside spend.
- Which actions feed the ad account's Conversions column, and whether booked or completed jobs go back to Google.
- Whose account holds the numbers on your trucks, signs and mailers, and whether they come with you if you leave.
- The ad schedule laid next to the hours someone answers the phone.
- Which Local Services Ads leads were disputed last month, and how many came back as credits.

Frequently asked questions
How do I market a home service business?
Start with the channels whose jobs you can trace to a paid invoice: your Google listing and reviews, referrals and repeat customers, then search ads, Local Services Ads and lead marketplaces. Before adding spend, make the job source a required pick in your field service software and give trucks, signs and mailers numbers of their own. Keep whatever brings completed jobs at a cost your job margin covers.
Which home services do people search for most?
Of the trade searches I checked in Google Ads Keyword Planner estimates for the US from October 2026, plumber near me runs highest at about 823,000 searches a month, then electrician near me at 368,000, and ac repair near me and furnace repair at 201,000 each. Those figures measure demand for help, not profit. A trade with fewer searches can still pay better if its jobs leave more after parts and labor.
Why does my Google Business Profile show more calls than my office booked?
The profile's Calls figure is a count of taps on the call button, and Google says its totals also take in actions from Google Ads. A tap is not an answered call and not a booking. Set the profile's monthly figure beside your phone log for the same dates, and count jobs from the listing with the source your CSR picks.
Do truck wraps and yard signs bring in jobs?
You can only tell when they carry a phone number printed nowhere else. Have that number ring the office line, have the CSR pick truck or sign as the source, and read completed jobs from it over a few months. With your main number on them, those jobs blend into Google and Other.
Should repeat customers count as a marketing source?
Yes, as a source of their own. Keep the channel that first found the customer on the customer record, and mark each later job as a repeat, with maintenance-plan visits separate. That way the first channel keeps credit for the customer it found, and repeat work never inflates an ad channel's numbers.
Can I ask customers to mention my technician by name in a Google review?
Google's review policy lists merchants asking staff to solicit reviews with specific content, including content that identifies a staff member, among what it prohibits. It also prohibits review quotas for staff and incentives such as discounts. Send every customer the same review link and let them write what they choose.
