A Google forwarding number is a phone number Google owns and shows in place of yours, in your call assets and call ads and to people who reach your site from an ad, so Google Ads can log each call and pass it on to your real line. To use it, turn on call reporting, count calls from ads and from your website as conversions, set a call length, and read each call in the call details report.

Before you turn it on

Check 1: Can your account get forwarding numbers?

Do: Check that the country code of the number on your call and location assets is on Google's country list (requirements).
You should see: Your country on the list, which includes the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
If not: If it is missing, or Account settings has no Call reporting option, your country or account type may not support forwarding numbers. Keep call reporting off so your call assets still serve (FAQ).
Careful: Forwarding numbers do not work for call assets on the Display Network, and a phone tree that uses early media is incompatible and may lead to calls reported as missed (where they don't work).

Calls from ads

Check 2: Is call reporting on?

WhereGoogle AdsAdminAccount settings
Do: Under Call reporting, select On, then Save (manage call reporting).
You should see: Within 24 hours, your call assets, location assets and call-only ads carry a forwarding number. It shares your area code when possible, otherwise uses a local code for your region, and falls back to toll-free (about phone numbers). On a phone, the ad still shows your number and the forwarding number appears in the dialer after the tap (FAQ).
If not: If the option is missing, go back to check 1.
Careful: Turning it off puts your own number back and stops tracking Calls from ads as conversions.

Check 3: Do your ads carry a call asset?

WhereGoogle AdsCampaignsAssets
Do: Select the plus icon, then Call, choose Account, Campaign or Ad group, and enter your business number (call assets).
You should see: The asset approved. The number must be in E.164 format (+12345678900, no spaces) and either appear in your site's source code or belong to a domain verified through Search Console.
If not: If your site swaps numbers with dynamic number insertion or a third-party call tracker, link Search Console to Google Ads, then edit and save the asset to resubmit it.
Careful: Call ads are being retired: Google dates the removal of all options to create new ones to February 2026, and existing ones stop receiving impressions in February 2027, so move their numbers to call assets (call ads).

Check 4: Does Calls from ads count as a conversion?

WhereGoogle AdsGoalsSummary
Do: Find Calls from ads, the action Google creates once call reporting is on and includes in the Conversions column (measure calls from ads).
You should see: It is active and set as a primary goal (call conversion types).
If not: To build your own, select + Create conversion action, Conversions from phone calls, Save and Continue, the category Phone call lead, then +Conversion action and Calls from ads.

Check 5: Does the call length fit your business?

WhereGoogle AdsGoalsSummary
Do: Open the Phone call leads drop-down, find AI-qualified call leads, select Edit, open Lead qualification and enter the minimum length in seconds (AI-qualified call leads).
You should see: A length a real inquiry passes and a misdial does not. A shorter call still shows as a phone call, not a conversion: in Google's example, a 26-second call against a 30-second setting is 1 phone call and 0 conversions (call reporting data).
If not: Compare real durations in the call details report (check 11) and adjust.
Careful: With call recording on, Google's AI rates each recording and the length only applies to calls it cannot record. Recording works only when both numbers are in the US or Canada, callers hear a notice, and it stays off for businesses Google identifies as healthcare or financial services until they enable it in Account settings under Call ads > Call recording and accept the Call Ads Supplemental Terms (recording settings).

Calls from your website

Check 6: Is there a website call action?

WhereGoogle AdsGoalsSummary
Do: Select + Create conversion action, Conversions from phone calls, the category Phone call lead, then Calls from website visits and Someone calls a number shown on my website, and add your phone number (measure calls from ads).
You should see: The action counts a call from someone who clicked your ad and then called the forwarding number on your site, once it lasts your minimum length (call conversion types). Setup ends with three choices: Install the tag yourself, Email the tag or Use Google Tag Manager.
If not: If your site uses dynamic number insertion or third-party call tracking, skip Tag Manager: Google does not recommend it there (website call setup).

Check 7: Is the phone snippet on every page with your number?

Do: Install the Google tag, then this snippet on every page that shows your number, with your tag ID and conversion label and the number written exactly as the page shows it, country code included (website call setup):
<script>
  gtag('config', 'TAG_ID/CONVERSION_LABEL', {
    'phone_conversion_number': '1-650-555-5555'
  });
</script>
You should see: One tracked number per page, which is all the default tag supports. A clickable tel: link also needs phone_conversion_callback, so the link changes along with the displayed number.
If not: To track calls to several numbers, choose Install the tag yourself, the option Google says to use for that.

Check 8: Using Google Tag Manager instead of code?

WhereGoogle Tag ManagerTagsNew
Do: Under Tag Configuration, select Google Ads Calls from Website Conversion, enter the phone number with the exact digits your site shows, add the Conversion ID and Label, and add a trigger (GTM steps).
You should see: The number in national format, without a plus sign, because this tag is not compatible with international formats.
If not: If the forwarding number shows a stray plus sign, enter the number again in national format.
Careful: A Google tag deployed through Tag Manager cannot verify your domain for the phone number check, so verify through Search Console (check 3).

Check 9: Does an ad click swap the number?

Do: Give the action up to an hour to take effect, then search for your ad, click it and read the number on the landing page. The click is charged (website call setup).
You should see: A Google forwarding number where your own number was.
If not: Check the tag in Tag Assistant. An Inactive Tag status often means the tag or snippet is not implemented correctly (call conversion types).
Careful: Delete the gwcc cookie from your browser before each repeat test.

Where the calls show up

Check 10: Are the Call Details columns on?

WhereGoogle AdsCampaignsColumnsCall Details
Do: On the Campaigns, Ad groups or Ads table, select the columns icon, choose Call Details, tick the columns you want and select Apply (call reporting data).
You should see: Phone calls, Phone Impr. and PTR. Hand-dialed calls count for campaigns and ad groups, not for keywords and ads. Segment by Click type to split mobile clicks-to-call from manually dialed calls (call types).
If not: If Phone calls runs ahead of call conversions, compare durations with your call length (check 5): a call has no minimum length, a conversion does.
Careful: A call is reported on the day it happens and its conversion on the day of the ad click, so the two can land on different dates.

Check 11: Can you read each call?

WhereGoogle AdsCampaignsInsights and reportsReport editor
Do: Under Ads and assets, select Call details (details of each call).
You should see: Each call's start time, duration, caller area code, status (missed or received), call source, call type, campaign, ad group and search keyword, plus the caller's number for most calls longer than 15 seconds, except in India and Japan, and the recording if call recording is on.
If not: If Performance Max calls are missing, remove the Ad group column, which hides them.

When Google's numbers are not enough

Google forwarding numbers only see calls from your ads and from ad clickers on your site. Calls from directories, mailers or visitors who never clicked an ad need a call tracking tool, which is where CallRail comes in. A counted call is also not a booked appointment, and a phone-booked appointment can only be matched to its call if the front desk records the caller's phone. Sending those outcomes back to Google Ads is closed-loop attribution.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Google ad show a different phone number?

Call reporting is on, so Google shows a Google forwarding number that it owns and forwards each call to your line while it logs the call. On mobile the ad shows your business number and the forwarding number appears in the dialer after the tap. To show only your own number, turn call reporting off in Account settings, which also stops "Calls from ads" counting and removes the call details report.

Can I put my Google forwarding number on my website or business cards?

No. Google owns the number and can change or reassign it, so it is meant only for call reporting and website call conversion tracking. On your site, let the phone snippet or the Tag Manager tag insert it for people who clicked an ad.

What happens if someone saves a Google forwarding number and calls later?

Once a person has called, the number keeps ringing your business for 60 days, and every new call restarts the 60 days. Someone who wrote the number down without calling has about 30 minutes after seeing the ad, up to about 2 hours in some markets, to place the first call, or it will not connect.

Do I pay for calls to a Google forwarding number?

A tap on the call button in your ad, or a click on "Call us" on desktop, costs the same as a headline click. Google does not charge when someone dials the number by hand, and the forwarding numbers it puts on your website cost nothing extra.
