Field service management software runs everything between a customer's first call and the paid invoice: booking, dispatch, the technician's phone app, estimates, invoicing and each customer's history. Pick one your office and crews can run through a week of real jobs. It should also keep the ad, listing or referral that brought in each job, right next to what that job paid.
Quick answer
Trial two or three products on your own jobs. Book one job by phone, one through your website and one from a Google lead, follow each to a paid invoice, and check that its source survived. Make the source required at booking, and ask which plan carries the call tracking connection. Housecall Pro, for one, connects to CallRail on its Essentials plan and above (Housecall Pro, checked 2026-10-04). Before signing, get a price for your exact headcount and a sample export of customers, jobs and invoices.
How is field service software different from a CRM?
A CRM (customer relationship management software) holds people and sales conversations: who called, what you quoted, when to call back. Field service software adds the job itself. Dispatch puts it on a technician's day, the technician's app carries the address, notes, photos and checklist to the truck, and the job closes with an invoice and a payment. Revenue lands on the job record, so that is where the customer's origin belongs too.
HVAC software and plumbing software are this same kind of product. The trade shows up in details such as maintenance agreements, equipment records tied to an address, and a price book (your list of set prices per task) that technicians quote from on site.
Which ad, listing or referral paid for this job?
Start with the lead source field, the label naming where a customer came from: Google Ads, a yard sign, a neighbor. It answers the question only when it sits on the job as well as the customer, since a returning customer can come back through another channel. Housecall Pro, for example, takes a lead source on customers, jobs and estimates (Housecall Pro, checked 2026-10-04), and its marketing ROI table (return on investment by source) lists a "No lead source" row for records where that field is blank (Housecall Pro, checked 2026-10-04). That row measures your blind spot.
Then make it impossible to skip. ServiceTitan lets you set which fields booking requires, campaign among them, under Settings, Operations, Job Booking (ServiceTitan, checked 2026-10-04). Jobber's request form can ask "How did you hear about us" and map the answer to the client's lead source, and a form question marked required must be answered before the client can submit (Jobber, checked 2026-10-04).
A source picked from a list depends on who answered, so let the system fill it where it can:
- Phone calls. Call tracking gives each channel its own number and can swap the number on your website to match where the visitor came from (dynamic number insertion, or DNI). When a ServiceTitan job is booked from a call to one of your campaign tracking numbers, the matching campaign is selected for you (ServiceTitan, checked 2026-10-04). Jobber's CallRail integration writes the marketing source, medium, campaign and keywords onto each client, for calls only, not texts or forms (Jobber, checked 2026-10-04).
- Your website. UTM tags are bits of text after the question mark in a web address (utm_source=google, for instance) that tell your software which ad or post a visitor followed. Jobber reads these tags on links to its request form and online booking to fill in the lead source, and its clients report puts UTM source, medium and campaign beside jobs and invoices in dollars (Jobber, checked 2026-10-04). Housecall Pro labels web bookings "My Website (Online Booking)" (Housecall Pro, checked 2026-10-04). That label names the website, so ask where the ad behind the visit is kept.
- Google itself. Local Services Ads are Google's ads for local service businesses, and with them "you pay for valid leads" (Google, checked 2026-10-04). Google's US list of booking partners for them includes Housecall Pro, Jobber, ServiceTitan and Workiz (Google, checked 2026-10-04). Jobber, for one, enters Google as the lead source for new clients who book from your Google Business Profile, the company listing Google shows at no cost (Jobber, checked 2026-10-04).
Which channels deserve a label of their own is a question for your marketing plan as a whole.
Can finished jobs flow back to Google Ads and Local Services Ads?
Google Ads bids toward whatever the account counts. If it counts calls, a dripping-faucet call and a new-furnace call weigh the same. Offline conversion import lets you tell Google which clicks or calls turned into sales later. For clicks, the lead must carry its gclid, the unique ID Google Ads gives every ad click that reaches your website (Google, checked 2026-10-04).
A field service product can send this itself. ServiceTitan says that when a visitor from an ad calls a DNI number, it stores the gclid with the caller, and final invoiced revenue goes back to Google Ads as the conversion value; it places this in its Marketing product, included in a ServiceTitan Max subscription (ServiceTitan, checked 2026-10-04). Without a built-in link, the gclid rides on the job and goes up in a scheduled upload, from your CRM to Google Ads. If Google's count and your job report then disagree, check these gaps first.
Local Services Ads take a different route. Google is shifting them into Google Ads, where they turn into a kind of Performance Max campaign (Google's automated format) that still charges per lead. The move starts in August 2026 with select home and storefront service advertisers in the United States, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and roofing among them (Google, checked 2026-10-04). In those campaigns you can mark each lead Booked or Completed by hand, and Google says that helps its automated systems optimize your campaign over time (Google, checked 2026-10-04).
Buying Google Ads and Meta Ads between October 2023 and September 2025, nearly $700K of cumulative spend, taught me that an ad account steers only toward outcomes someone reports back.
How do you test it on a real week of jobs?
Run the trial in your own account, not a sales demo, with your dispatcher and one technician.
| Area | Try this with your own jobs | It fails if |
|---|---|---|
| Dispatch | Squeeze an emergency into a full day, move a job to another technician | The app shows the change only after the office calls |
| Technician app | Close a job with no signal: photos, notes, signature | It will not close, or photos vanish later |
| Estimates and invoices | Build a two-option estimate, win it, invoice it | Anyone retypes a price |
| Payments | Take a card in the field | The payment has to be matched to the invoice by hand |
| Customer history | Open an address you have served before | Past jobs, equipment or notes are missing |
| Required source | Book a phone job and leave the source empty | The job saves |
| Web booking | Book through your link with utm_source=test added | The job or client shows no test source |
| Tracked call | Call a tracking number and book the caller | The job lacks that number's campaign |
| Revenue by source | Mark the test jobs paid, run the source report | It counts leads or jobs but shows no dollars |
What does a year cost once users and add-ons are counted?
Jobber lists its Core plan at $49 a month with no commitment, plus $29 a month per added user (Jobber, checked 2026-10-04). Housecall Pro lists Basic at $79 a month billed monthly or $59 a month billed annually, and $35 a month per additional user on its Max plan (Housecall Pro, checked 2026-10-04). ServiceTitan prices per technician, on request (ServiceTitan, checked 2026-10-04). Ask for the card processing rate separately; it follows revenue, not headcount.
Three lines make quotes comparable:
- Year-one cost = (plan + extra users + add-ons, per month) × 12 + one-time fees
- Cost per completed job = year-one cost ÷ jobs you expect to complete in 12 months
- Blind share = revenue on jobs with no source ÷ all invoiced revenue
Illustrative: picture an invented HVAC and plumbing company with seven technicians and two people in the office. I made up every figure for it; none belongs to a client.
| Line | How it is figured | Made-up amount |
|---|---|---|
| Plan with 5 users | $320 a month × 12 | $3,840 |
| 4 more users | 4 × $40 a month × 12 | $1,920 |
| Call tracking service | $95 a month × 12 | $1,140 |
| Setup and training | One time | $1,200 |
| Moving customers and jobs from the old system | One time | $600 |
| Year one | Sum of the lines | $8,700 |
With 2,400 completed jobs expected, year one costs $8,700 ÷ 2,400 = $3.63 per job. Without the one-time $1,800, year two costs $6,900 ÷ 2,400 = $2.88.
Run the blind share on your current system before shopping. For the same invented company, last year's export shows $1,250,000 invoiced, $300,000 of it on jobs with an empty source: $300,000 ÷ $1,250,000 = 24%. Against $96,000 a year of Google Ads and Local Services Ads, nearly a quarter of revenue has no channel to credit. The call tracking line, $1,140, equals 1.2% of that ad spend.
How do you switch without losing the history?
Export the old system before you sign: customers with addresses, equipment and notes; jobs with dates and sources; invoices and payments. Jobber's clients report downloads as a CSV, a file any spreadsheet opens (Jobber, checked 2026-10-04), and Housecall Pro's ROI table has its own export (Housecall Pro, checked 2026-10-04). Ask the new vendor who runs the import, which old field becomes its lead source, and what happens to open estimates and maintenance agreements. If tracking numbers live inside the old system, settle how they move before cancelling, since your ads and listings show them.
Which answers should the sales rep put in writing?
- Which plan includes revenue by source, the call tracking connection, UTM capture on online booking, and Local Services Ads booking?
- Can the source be required on every booking path, and does an automatic source land on the job or only the customer?
- Can completed-job revenue go to Google Ads with the click id, and on which plan? If not, can I export jobs with click id and revenue?
- How will your Local Services Ads connection work after my account moves into Google Ads?
- What is the price for my technicians and office users, with add-ons, setup, data import, card processing and contract length?
- What does a full export contain, and is there a fee when I leave?

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CRM and field service management software?
A CRM keeps people and sales: who called, what you quoted, who needs a follow-up. Field service management software also runs the job itself, from dispatch to a technician through the phone app to the invoice and the payment. Because revenue lands on the job, a required source on each job lets the software say which channel paid. A contact list alone cannot.
How much does field service management software cost?
It depends on the pricing model and on how many people log in. On October 4, 2026, Jobber listed its Core plan at $49 a month without a commitment plus $29 a month for each added user, Housecall Pro listed Basic at $79 a month on monthly billing, and ServiceTitan priced per technician on request. Add every user, every add-on, setup and the data move, then compare first-year totals rather than monthly prices.
Is HVAC software different from plumbing software?
They are the same kind of product: scheduling, dispatch, a technician app, estimates and invoicing. The trade shows up in details, such as maintenance agreements and equipment records for HVAC, or a price book that covers drain and repipe work. Run your own job types through the trial instead of comparing feature grids.
Can Local Services Ads bookings go straight into my field service software?
Yes, if your software is one of Google's booking partners for Local Services Ads; Google's US list includes Housecall Pro, Jobber, ServiceTitan and Workiz. After connecting it, book a test through the ad and check that the job arrives with a Google source. Once Google shifts these ads into Google Ads, you can mark each lead Booked or Completed there, and Google says those statuses help its systems optimize.
Do I need call tracking if my software already has a lead source field?
The field holds an answer; call tracking fills it in for phone calls without anyone choosing from a list. ServiceTitan picks the campaign by itself when a job is booked from a call to one of your campaign tracking numbers, and Jobber and Housecall Pro both connect to CallRail. Without call tracking, a phone job's source is whatever the person who answered selected.
