Yelp Advertising: What You Buy and What to Count

Yelp Ads bill per click behind a monthly cap, not a bid; Page Upgrades and Nearby Jobs bill differently. What each costs and what to track before renewing.

Yelp Ads bill you per click through an auction, but you never set the bid; you set a monthly ceiling (Yelp lists ads from $150 a month) and Yelp decides the rest. Whether that is worth paying depends entirely on a number Yelp's own dashboard does not show you: how many of those clicks turned into a job you actually finished and got paid for.

Quick answer

Open your Yelp for Business account and list what is live: a Yelp Ads campaign, any Page Upgrade bundle, Request a Quote, Nearby Jobs. Each bills differently, so pull each charge separately rather than reading one combined Yelp bill. Give every Yelp caller and every Yelp lead a tag in your own booking or field service software, not just in Yelp's activity graph. Before the next renewal, divide what Yelp cost that period by the jobs it produced, completed and paid, and hold that number against what the same money gets you from another channel.

What exactly am I buying from Yelp?

Yelp says 74 million or more people visit it each month (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07). Four products cover most of what a local service business sees from Yelp, and none of them bills the same way.

Yelp productHow it is billed (as Yelp states)What to count before renewing
Yelp Ads (self-serve)Per click, through an automated auction; you set a monthly maximum instead of a bid (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07; Yelp, checked 2026-10-07)Which plan you are on: self-serve carries no term contract (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07); a Purchase Order plan can carry a commitment period and an early termination fee (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07)
Page Upgrades (Business Highlights, Call to Action, logo, slideshow, Connect, competitor-ad removal)A fixed fee, billed on the first day of the cycle for the month before (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07); sold one by one or bundled (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07)The Upgrade Package bundle starts with a 14-day free trial (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07); whether calls or quote requests rose, not just page views
Request a QuoteFree to set up (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07)Whether these leads get their own source tag, so the free ones do not get credited to the ads
Nearby JobsFree to browse the feed; you pay only for jobs you choose to answer (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07)How many of the jobs you paid to answer booked

Yelp's pricing page lists Yelp Ads from $150 a month, the Upgrade Package at $180 a month and the two together from $270 a month, and notes that minimum budgets are subject to change (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07). Its ads page puts the low end at $5 a day on average (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07), and its upgrades guide says a single Page Upgrade starts as low as $1 a day (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07). Yelp Ads show in "Sponsored Results" above and below search results and on competitors' pages (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07).

Yelp publishes no fixed price per click, since its auction sets one moment by moment. For context only, Google Ads Keyword Planner estimates for the US, October 2026, show an average Google click costing $39.45 when someone searches "plumber near me" and $46.46 on the search "garage door repair near me". Prices in your town will differ, and neither figure is what Yelp charges or what your business will pay.

Does advertising change my reviews or my star rating?

Yelp's support pages say its recommendation software "applies the same objective rules to every business and treats reviews of advertisers and non-advertisers exactly the same" (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07). The recommendation software is Yelp's term for the automated system that decides which reviews count; reviews it does not recommend sit behind a link at the bottom of your page and stay out of your star rating and review count (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07). No Yelp employee can manually override what it decides. Starting, stopping or never running a Yelp ad does not change that decision either way, so a lower rating is not something a Yelp ad fixes or an unpaid listing risks.

Can I ask customers to leave a Yelp review, the way I might on Google?

No, and Yelp is specific about it: "Don't ask anyone to review your business, be it customers, mailing list subscribers, friends, family, etc." (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07). The same page warns that "proactively asking for reviews may hurt your Yelp rating because our automated software may not recommend reviews that seem to be prompted or encouraged by the business," and offering freebies, discounts or payment for reviews can bring a pop-up consumer alert on your page.

Google draws the line differently: a business may "solicit or encourage the posting of content that does represent a genuine experience," as long as it offers no incentive, does not try to influence the rating or content, and does not selectively ask for positive reviews (Google, checked 2026-10-07). So a follow-up text built for Google reviews, "if you have a minute, we'd appreciate a review," breaks Yelp's rule even though it follows Google's. A Canadian business also answers to the Competition Act: the Competition Bureau says liability can reach anyone who writes a review, or lets one be written, that leaves consumers with a false or misleading impression, on any platform (Competition Bureau of Canada, checked 2026-10-07).

What does Yelp for Business actually report, and what does it miss?

Under Activity, Yelp for Business shows page visits, "how many times your Yelp page was accessed or viewed," and Leads, which bundle "phone calls, website visits, and other actions that potential customers take to engage with your business" (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07). The Yelp Ads dashboard adds ad clicks, an average cost-per-click for the billing period, a split between ad leads and organic leads, and, for select businesses, call tracking that reports average call duration and calls received versus answered (Yelp, checked 2026-10-07).

None of those pages measures whether a lead turned into a job you finished and got paid for. That number lives only in your own booking calendar, invoices or field service software, so the dashboard shows interest, never the answer itself.

How do I tell a Yelp call or lead from every other call?

Two pieces of setup close that gap. Put a phone number used only on your Yelp page, forwarded to your regular line, so every ring on it is a Yelp caller; Yelp's own call tracking, where offered, adds duration and answer counts, but only your desk can tell you whether the caller became a customer. On the intake script or booking form, offer a short, fixed list of sources rather than a blank box, with Yelp as one of the choices. A "Yelp" answer also covers people who found your page in unpaid search, so read it next to the Yelp Ads dashboard's split between ad and organic leads.

Log the source on the customer record, not on a single invoice, so a repeat customer who first found you through Yelp stays tagged that way even when the next job comes through a text message.

What's the per-job math?

Illustrative: the figures that follow describe a plumbing company I made up for this example; none of them is a client's number. Over one made-up month it ran a Yelp Ads campaign with a Page Upgrade bundle, and it ran Google Local Services Ads too, a per-lead product billed only for a valid call, message or booking request (Google, checked 2026-10-07).

RowWhat it countsYelp (made up)Local Services Ads (made up)
Ad spendYelp or Google billing$450$400
Page Upgrade feeYelp billing$180n/a
Clicks or valid leads countedYelp Ads or Local Services Ads dashboard210 clicks14 leads
Calls logged from this sourceFront desk log1912
Jobs booked from those callsField service software75
Jobs completed and paidField service software65

Cost per booked job on Yelp is spend plus fee, divided by jobs booked: ($450 + $180) ÷ 7 = $90.00. Cost per completed job runs the same divide against the smaller number: $630 ÷ 6 = $105.00. Local Services Ads, with no Page Upgrade fee in this made-up month, lands at $400 ÷ 5 = $80.00 per completed job either way, since every booked job also got paid.

At $105 against $80, this invented company would hold its Yelp budget rather than grow it and recount after another full month: with counts this small, two more paid Yelp jobs ($630 ÷ 8 = $78.75) would reverse the order. The same two formulas, ad spend (plus any Page Upgrade fee) divided by jobs booked, and again divided by jobs completed and paid, work on your own numbers regardless of how many sources you run.

What should I ask before I renew?

  • Which product is this charge for: Yelp Ads, a specific Page Upgrade or Nearby Jobs?
  • What was my actual average cost-per-click this billing period, against the monthly maximum I set?
  • Can you export every ad click and lead with its date and source, so I can match it against my own booking log?
  • Is this a self-serve campaign I can end any time, or a Purchase Order with its own commitment period and early termination fee?
  • If the Upgrade Package's 14-day free trial already ran on this account, when does the next charge start?

The per-job math for lead marketplaces like Angi and Thumbtack covers paying per lead rather than per click or a flat fee, and what Google's per-lead ads for home services require and charge covers the second source in the example above. A broader look at home service marketing channels covers search ads, referrals and your free Google listing, the channels to hold Yelp against.

Frequently asked questions

Is Yelp a good way to advertise?

That depends on whether the completed, paid jobs it brings cost less than they return, and Yelp's own dashboard cannot answer that because it stops at leads, calls and clicks. Tag every Yelp call and lead in your own booking or field service software, mark which ones became paid work, and divide what Yelp cost by that count.

How much does Yelp charge to advertise?

Yelp Ads bill per click through an automated auction, but instead of a bid you set a monthly maximum; Yelp's pricing page lists Yelp Ads from $150 a month, and its ads page says you can spend as little as $5 a day on average. Page Upgrades (Business Highlights, a Call to Action button, your logo and similar features) are a fixed monthly fee, from about $1 a day each or $180 a month for the Upgrade Package bundle. Request a Quote is free to set up, and Nearby Jobs charges only for the jobs you choose to respond to.

Do people still use Yelp in 2026?

Yelp states that 74 million or more people visit the site each month and that an average of 2.4 million visit each day to find home services, restaurants and other businesses. Neither number says how many of those visits happen in your city or your trade.

Can I ask my customers to leave a Yelp review?

No. Yelp's guidance says not to ask anyone to review your business, including customers, mailing list subscribers, friends or family, and warns that its software may not recommend reviews that seem prompted, which keeps them out of your rating. Google allows asking as long as you offer no incentive, do not try to influence the rating or content, and do not selectively ask only for positive reviews, so the same request that is fine on Google can cost you on Yelp.

Does advertising on Yelp change my star rating?

Yelp says its recommendation software applies the same objective rules to every business and treats reviews of advertisers and non-advertisers exactly the same, so paying for ads does not itself move a review in or out of your rating. What moves a review is that automated software judging whether it looks reliable and unbiased, and no Yelp employee can override it.

How can I start advertising on Yelp?

Claim your free Business Page first, since Yelp Ads, Page Upgrades and Request a Quote all sit on top of it. From the Yelp Ads tab in your Yelp for Business account you then set a monthly maximum rather than a per-click bid, and a self-serve campaign carries no term contract, so you can pause or end it at any time.
