Junk removal marketing pays when you can follow a job from the search to the paid pickup, and the step to watch is the quote, where the customer decides whether to book. Below I walk that path and show where each source can be tagged, so the pickup still knows where it came from.
Quick answer
Keep one record for every request: source, date, quoted amount, booked or not, final ticket. Give each paid or offline source its own phone number or tagged link. Free listings first, paid clicks after. Once a month, divide what each source cost by the pickups it booked, and drop or change the one with the worst number.
Where does a junk job slip away?
The lists of advertising ideas that rank for this search stop at the first box. The loss can hide in the third: a customer who sends photos to several companies may book whichever answers first with a clear price. I would time that step on your own phone, from photo received to quote sent, before spending another dollar to send more people into it.
What are customers typing, and what does a click cost?
Read the table as Google Ads Keyword Planner estimates for the US, October 2026: a nationwide mean cost per click (CPC) and the low and high bids seen for a top-of-page slot. Your local auction sets the price you actually pay.
| Customer search | Monthly volume, US | Avg. CPC | Top-of-page bids, low to high |
|---|---|---|---|
| junk removal | 135,000 | $17.21 | $4.07 to $24.00 |
| junk removal near me | 110,000 | $15.66 | $3.40 to $23.27 |
| furniture removal near me | 9,900 | $14.79 | $3.46 to $16.58 |
| junk removal cost | 5,400 | $7.83 | $1.83 to $8.19 |
"Junk removal cost" is a person asking for a price, which is your photo quote in search form. The planner shows a lower price for it than for the broad searches, though I would test it before assuming it books.
Which free sources come first?
Your Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows on Maps, comes before any paid click. For a business that travels to customers, Google's guidelines say it should have one profile with a designated service area, and the area should not extend beyond about two hours of driving from the business (Google, checked 2026-10-14). They also say that a service-area business should hide its address from customers, which covers a company run from home, and that the name should reflect the real-world name, with no service details or phone numbers added to it (Google, checked 2026-10-14). The setup details are in Business Profile for contractors.
For reviews, Google's policy bars offering incentives such as discounts or free services, and bars selectively soliciting positive reviews, while asking customers for genuine reviews is allowed (Google, checked 2026-10-14). A text after each paid pickup that goes to everybody, not only the happy ones, stays inside that.
How does each paid source bill, and what do you ask?
- Google Ads: with cost-per-click bidding you pay for each click on your ads (Google, checked 2026-10-14), and the table above gives the market's sense of scale. From October 2023 to September 2025 I bought Google Ads and Meta Ads for other businesses, nearly $700K in all, and the figure I learned to read was booked jobs, not clicks.
- Local Services Ads: Google's requirements page lists junk removal under Home services in the US (Google, checked 2026-10-14), and the Canada version of the page lists it too (Google, checked 2026-10-14). Google's help says you pay only for leads related to your business (Google, checked 2026-10-14). The comparison with regular ads is in Local Services Ads vs Google Ads.
- Yelp: its help center says you pay per click, at a price set by an automated auction that moves with supply and demand (Yelp, checked 2026-10-14), and its ads page says you can adjust your budget or pause the ad anytime (Yelp, checked 2026-10-14).
- Nextdoor: for ads made from a business page, its help offers pay as you go, billed for impressions after the ads run, or a monthly subscription charged up front at the daily budget times 30 (Nextdoor, checked 2026-10-14). More in Nextdoor advertising.
- Thumbtack: its help says you pay for leads, customers who reach out to you directly, at a lead price you set (Thumbtack, checked 2026-10-14). Ask what gets refunded. The read is in Is Thumbtack worth it.
How does a truck, a hanger or a realtor keep its source?
Give every offline source a different way in. A phone number used on one truck only is the simplest, and call tracking software can hand out one number per source. A QR code or a link on a door hanger can carry a campaign tag: Google's analytics help says to always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, and that the values are case sensitive, so "Truck" and "truck" count as two sources (Google, checked 2026-10-14). Pick lowercase once and write it down.
| Source | How you pay | How to tag it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads | Per click | Auto-tagging on, plus a tracking number on the ad |
| Business Profile | Free | Its own number and a link tagged gbp |
| Local Services Ads | Per lead | The lead's own record in the Google account |
| Truck wrap | Once, up front | One number and one QR link used on that truck only |
| Door hanger | Printing and time | Different QR link for each neighborhood |
| Realtor or property manager | A favor, or a referral fee | Ask on the quote form, and give the partner a short link |
What do you do with the photo, and can you text the price?
Save the photos and the quote on the request, and the source with them. The customer asked for the price, so it is a reply to a request, but a second text a week later about a discount is a promotion, and the rules treat the two differently.
In the US, the FCC's rule requires prior express written consent for autodialed telemarketing texts to a cell phone, meaning a signed agreement that names the number, authorizes those messages and says signing is not a condition of buying. Autodialed texts that are not marketing need prior express consent, which the rule does not require in writing (47 CFR 64.1200, checked 2026-10-14). In Canada, CASL defines an electronic message to include a text and bars commercial ones without consent, but a message that only gives a quote the person requested is exempt from the consent part and must still identify you and offer an unsubscribe (CASL, checked 2026-10-14). This is not legal advice, and I am not a lawyer; ask yours where a follow-up text falls.
What does a month by source look like?
Illustrative: picture an imaginary two-truck junk hauler; every figure below is invented, and none comes from a client. Cost per booked pickup is spend divided by pickups booked; the ticket is the final amount paid.
| Source | Spend | Quotes sent | Pickups booked | Booked share | Average ticket | Cost per booked pickup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Ads | $1,800 | 60 | 24 | 40% | $310 | $75 |
| Business Profile | $0 | 45 | 22 | 49% | $280 | $0 |
| Nextdoor | $300 | 15 | 4 | 27% | $240 | $75 |
| Realtor referrals | $0 | 10 | 8 | 80% | $520 | $0 |
| Truck wrap | $0 this month | 6 | 2 | 33% | $200 | not counted |
That is 136 quotes and 60 pickups, and $19,120 of tickets (24 x $310, 22 x $280, 4 x $240, 8 x $520, 2 x $200). Google Ads and Nextdoor both cost $75 per booked pickup, but each ad dollar brought back about $4.13 of tickets on Google ($7,440 over $1,800) against $3.20 on Nextdoor ($960 over $300). Tickets are revenue; disposal fees and labor still come out. The made-up lesson is that the two free rows booked a bigger share than the paid ones, so they deserve the same fast quote as a paid click.
What should you ask a marketing company or a vendor?
- Do you track calls, forms and texts as booked pickups, or as clicks?
- Can I see the quote and the source side by side, per request?
- Which pages or numbers does each source use, and who owns them if I leave?
- How does a shared lead get refunded?
- Who sees the account, and can I export every request?

Frequently asked questions
Should I quote by phone or ask for photos first?
Ask for photos when the price depends on how much there is and where it sits, because a number given blind can end up corrected on the driveway. Whatever you choose, write the source and the quoted amount on the same record, so you can later see which source sent customers who accepted the price.
Can I text a customer the quote?
In the US, the FCC's autodialer rule asks for written consent before autodialed marketing texts, and a quote the customer asked for is a different thing from a later promotion, so keep the two apart and ask a lawyer where your line falls. In Canada, CASL covers texts meant to encourage commercial activity, and a text that only gives a quote the recipient requested is exempt from its consent requirement, though it still has to identify you and offer an unsubscribe. I am not a lawyer.
Is junk removal eligible for Local Services Ads?
Google's requirements page lists junk removal under Home services in both its US and its Canada versions. The page lists categories, not cities, so check your own address in the sign-up flow before you plan around it.
How does a QR code on my truck tell me who booked?
Point it at your quote page with a campaign URL that names the truck as the source, and let that page save the tag with the request. If the customer calls instead, only a phone number used on that truck alone carries the source.
What if a customer finds me twice, once on Maps and once through an ad?
Ask the question on the quote itself and save the answer next to the system's tag. When the two disagree, count the job for the source you can show, and list the rest as unclear so the gap stays visible.
