Painting contractor marketing earns its keep when an estimate turns into a signed, paid job, not when a form fill turns into an estimate. Track estimates set, estimates sold and average job value by source, and a cheap lead that never closes stops looking cheap.
Quick answer
- Add four columns to every estimate: source, interior or exterior, sold or not, and the reason if not.
- Each month, work out close rate (estimates sold ÷ estimates set) and average job value (revenue ÷ jobs sold) by source.
- Book the first in-home estimate within a few business days of the inquiry, and log a follow-up call on every estimate that didn't sell.
- Keep interior estimates coming through the months when search demand drops; the seasonality table below shows November as the national low.
- Before an ad offers work on homes built before 1978, confirm the firm's lead-safe certification; the federal rule covers offering the work, not only doing it, and paint prep, not only a full repaint.
What belongs on every estimate sheet?
A painting job is sold on one estimate, or a second if the scope changes, so a funnel built for a long chain of touches hides more than it shows. The sheet that matters sits wherever estimates are logged, whether that's a spreadsheet or the job board inside your estimating software (the program that turns a measured job into a priced quote).
| Column | What it answers | Who fills it |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Which channel brought the inquiry | Office, at first contact |
| Date set and date given | How fast the estimate reached the homeowner | Estimator |
| Interior or exterior | Which season's demand the job falls under | Estimator |
| Amount quoted | What the job would cost at that scope | Estimator |
| Sold or not | Whether the homeowner signed | Office, once the homeowner answers |
| Reason lost, if not sold | Price, timing, chose another painter, no response | Office, on the follow-up call |
Six columns cover it. Open last month's rows, count how many carry a source and a reason-lost entry, and fix the gaps before judging any channel below. Once the sheet is ready to feed the ad accounts, a tracking plan template for a lead-driven business lists each lead event with its Google Ads conversion action and who owns it.
Where do painting jobs come from?
Six channels come up for a residential painter, and each ties to a sold job a different way.
| Channel | You pay for | How the estimate sheet knows it came from here |
|---|---|---|
| Search ads | Each click | A phone number shown only in the ads, plus a page nothing else links to |
| Google Business Profile | Staff time to post photos | The office's source pick on the estimate sheet |
| Yard signs at job sites | The sign itself | A number printed only on the sign, or the office's pick |
| Past clients and referrals | Staff time, maybe a thank-you | The office asks "who sent you" on the first call |
| Nextdoor | Free posts, or paid Nextdoor ads | A number used only on Nextdoor, or the office's pick |
| Thumbtack | A lead price you set per service | Thumbtack's lead list, matched by phone number |
Search ads bill per click, and Keyword Planner put the US average cost per click for "house painters near me" at $14.20, with a top-of-page bid range (what advertisers bid to show above the unpaid results) of $5.70 to $32.58 (Google Ads Keyword Planner estimates for the US, October 2026). Those are national averages; prices in your market differ, and none of it predicts your bill. With a forwarding number on the ad (a separate number that rings the office but logs each call as an ad call), those calls stay separate from the number on the truck, and the ad account's own count usually runs higher than what the estimate sheet shows.
A Business Profile is Google's free listing on Search and Maps. Before-and-after photos from the last finished job give a homeowner something a text-only listing can't, and posting them costs nothing but the time to upload. Is Thumbtack worth it for a service business weighs its lead price against close rate, the same question this post asks of every channel. Nextdoor advertising covers the free-post and paid-ad split on that platform.
How fast should an estimate be booked, and who follows up the ones that don't sign?
Open the estimate sheet and count the days between the inquiry call and the date the estimate was actually given. A gap of a week or more gives a homeowner time to book with whoever showed up first. Ask whoever answers the phone whether same-week or next-week appointments are the default, and whether anyone owns the calendar when the estimator is on a job.
Then filter for rows marked "not sold" in the last 60 days and count how many have a logged follow-up call. Rows marked "timing" or "thinking it over" are the first to call back; a "price" row needs a different scope or number before another call has anything new to say. Ask the office who makes that call, and on what schedule, since an estimate that never gets a follow-up looks identical in the sheet to one that was properly closed out.
Does interior work fill the months exterior can't?
Exterior painting depends on weather; interior work doesn't. Keyword Planner can't split the two, since "house painters near me" covers both, so the table shows total US monthly searches and your own interior-or-exterior column shows the split.
| Month | US searches for "house painters near me" |
|---|---|
| Sep 2025 | 165,000 |
| Oct 2025 | 135,000 |
| Nov 2025 | 60,500 |
| Dec 2025 | 90,500 |
| Jan 2026 | 165,000 |
| Feb 2026 | 135,000 |
| Mar 2026 | 135,000 |
| Apr 2026 | 110,000 |
| May 2026 | 90,500 |
| Jun 2026 | 90,500 |
| Jul 2026 | 90,500 |
| Aug 2026 | 90,500 |
(Google Ads Keyword Planner estimates for the US, October 2026; local demand can follow a different shape than the national curve.) September and January share the high, 165,000, and November is the low point, less than half October's figure. That's the month to push interior estimates through past clients and the Business Profile rather than search, and to schedule the next season's exterior follow-up calls from the sheet above.
What does the EPA require before an ad offers work on an older home?
The federal Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule reaches work that disturbs painted surfaces in housing, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978. The EPA says the rule requires that "anyone paid to perform work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978 be certified," with their employees trained in lead-safe work practices (EPA, checked 2026-10-05). The federal definition of renovation names "surface preparation activity (such as sanding, scraping, or other such activities that may generate paint dust)," so prep counts, not only a full repaint. It leaves out minor repair and maintenance: 6 square feet or less of painted surface per room inside, or 20 square feet or less outside, with no window replacement, demolition or prohibited work practices (40 CFR 745.83, checked 2026-10-05).
The rule reaches the ad, not only the job: no firm may "perform, offer, or claim to perform renovations" in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities without certification (40 CFR 745.81, checked 2026-10-05). The firm holds the certification, and the same section requires each job to be directed by a certified renovator; neither is the ad writer's to assume, so check both before a landing page or an ad offers exterior prep on older homes. EPA has authorized 14 states, among them Massachusetts, North Carolina and Oregon, to run their own programs (EPA, checked 2026-10-05); in those, check the state program, not this post, for what applies.
Which source wins once estimates turn into sold jobs?
Illustrative: every figure in this month is made up for a two-crew residential painting company that doesn't exist, and none comes from a client's books.
| Source | Spend | Estimates set | Sold | Close rate | Avg job value | Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search ads | $2,130 | 25 | 6 | 24% | $4,800 | $28,800 |
| Business Profile (unpaid) | $0 | 20 | 9 | 45% | $4,200 | $37,800 |
| Yard signs & referrals | $0 | 15 | 9 | 60% | $5,100 | $45,900 |
| Nextdoor | $300 | 8 | 3 | 38% | $3,900 | $11,700 |
| Thumbtack | $540 | 12 | 2 | 17% | $3,200 | $6,400 |
Close rate is sold ÷ estimates set, and average job value is revenue ÷ jobs sold; run both formulas on your own sheet with your own numbers. Search ads set the most estimates, 25, but sold only 6 of them, a 24% close rate against 60% for yard signs and referrals. Cost per sold job (spend ÷ jobs sold) tells a sharper story on the paid rows: search ads $2,130 ÷ 6 = $355, Thumbtack $540 ÷ 2 = $270, Nextdoor $300 ÷ 3 = $100. Thumbtack looked cheap per estimate, $540 ÷ 12 = $45 against $2,130 ÷ 25 = $85.20 for search, but its 17% close rate made each sold job cost six times that.
Nearly $700K of Google Ads and Meta Ads spend as a media buyer, October 2023 to September 2025, taught me to read every channel this way: a cheap estimate proves nothing until the sheet ties it to a sold job.
What to ask a painting marketing agency
- Which column in your report matches the office's sold-or-not column, not just estimates set or leads.
- Whether Thumbtack and Nextdoor leads land in the same estimate sheet as search and referrals, or sit in a separate app nobody reconciles.
- Who holds the Business Profile login, and how often before-and-after photos actually get posted.
- Whether anyone checks the firm's lead-safe certification before an ad offers work on pre-1978 homes.
- How a slow month like November gets judged, given that the planner table shows demand itself dropping, not just your close rate.

Frequently asked questions
How do I market my painting company?
Add a source column, an interior-or-exterior column, and a sold-or-not column to every estimate, then read close rate and average job value by source each month. Push the channels your office can already tie to a sold job first, your Business Profile with before-and-after photos, past clients and yard signs, before adding paid ones. Keep interior estimates moving through the months when search demand drops, as it does nationally in November.
How do I find customers for a painting company?
Start with the customers a crew already finished a job for: ask each one for a referral and post the before-and-after photos to your Business Profile. Add Nextdoor posts and a Thumbtack listing once the estimate sheet can show which one turns into sold jobs, not just which one is cheaper per lead. A yard sign at a current job site works the same street the crew is already on.
Do painting contractors make good money?
No single number answers that for every market; it depends on average job value, close rate and what a job costs to run, figures that live in your own estimate sheet, not in an industry average. Two companies with the same number of estimates can land in very different places if one closes a third of them and the other closes half. Track those two figures by source before asking whether the business as a whole is profitable.
Do I need an EPA certification to advertise work on a home built before 1978?
The federal rule bars a firm from performing, offering or claiming to perform renovation work in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities without certification, so the offer counts, not only the job. Paid prep such as scraping and sanding is covered; small minor-repair jobs under the rule's square-foot limits are not. EPA has authorized 14 states to run their own programs, so in those states check the state's certification rules instead.
How soon should I follow up on an estimate that didn't sell?
Call within a few business days of handing over the number, while the homeowner still remembers the crew and the quote. Log the call and the stated reason, price, timing or another painter, on the estimate sheet rather than only in memory. For a homeowner who said the timing was wrong, a second call before the season that job needs costs nothing but the office's time.
