Dental Website Templates: Five Tests Beyond Looks

Dental website templates pass or fail on tap-to-call, booking, forms, phone speed and room for a Google tag. Test a demo in ten minutes.

On the demos of dental website templates you like, tap the phone number, then the booking button. Those are two of five tests that decide whether a template is enough.

Template galleries sort by looks.

Quick answer

  • Open the template's live demo on your phone and tap every phone number.
  • Follow the booking button until you reach a real calendar, not another form.
  • Test the contact form on your own trial copy, not on the demo.
  • Run the demo URL through PageSpeed Insights and read the mobile score.
  • Check your plan allows code or a Google tag (it tracks visits) before you pay for the year.

The five tests, and what a fail looks like

Three of the tests take a minute or two each on the template's demo page. The demo is the seller's best case, so a fail here will not get better after you add your photos.

TestHow to run it on your phoneA fail looks like
Tap-to-callTap the phone number in the header and the footerNothing happens, or the number is plain text
BookingTap "Book now" and keep goingIt lands on a contact form, a dead link or a page of placeholder text
FormSend a test from your own trial copyThe full text of the message arrives in an ordinary email
SpeedPaste the demo URL into PageSpeed InsightsThe mobile result is red, or the rotating top banner loads for seconds
Tracking roomLook for a "custom code" or "integrations" setting on your planYou can't add a Google tag, or the plan that allows it costs more

If you plan to run ads, Google can also count calls from your website as conversions, through a number it swaps into the page. For what a form may safely collect, see HIPAA website forms.

What each platform lets you add

The fifth test is the one demos hide, so check the vendor's help page for your plan. After 8+ years of building websites, I read a plan's add-on rules first.

Squarespace confirms code injection, its custom-code setting, is available in the Core, Plus and Advanced plans, plus some legacy plans. The same page adds that its support team can't help you add custom code or troubleshoot problems it causes.

Wix asks for a published site with a connected domain before you add custom code, and connecting a domain needs a Premium or Studio plan. The custom code page holds a catch for anyone planning ads.

On WordPress.com, installing plugins is available on its paid plans (Personal, Premium, Business and Commerce), not on a free site. A plugin is a WordPress add-on, such as a form tool or a tag installer. The same page lists uploading third-party themes on the Personal plan, which is how a bought theme gets onto WordPress.com.

A ThemeForest theme is a different thing: a design file you install on a WordPress site yourself. For an item sold as supported, Envato's item support policy gives six months of support from the purchase date, up to 12 with extended support. It does not cover installing the theme on your server or changing it beyond its original features.

A ten-minute check from your couch

Before you pay for anything, work through this with the template's demo link and your phone.

  1. Open the demo and turn off Wi-Fi so you see it as a patient on mobile data would.
  2. Tap each phone number. Write down which ones dial.
  3. Tap the booking button three times from three different pages. Note where each one ends.
  4. Send a test through the form on your own trial copy, where the alert comes to you. Read the email that arrives.
  5. Open pagespeed.web.dev, paste the demo address and switch to the mobile tab.
  6. Open the platform's help page on custom code and find your plan in it.

On step 5, Google's own explanation of PageSpeed Insights says a recently published page may have too few real visitors for field data. PSI then shows data for the whole site, or none. On a demo, that whole-site data describes the seller's site, not the demo, so compare the simulated lab results instead.

The scorecard for one new practice

Template, custom, or a dental platform

Pick by the test you can't fix.

  • Template: fits when all five tests pass or the failing ones are settings you can change.
  • Custom build: fits when a test fails and the platform blocks the fix, or you need pages the template can't make. Compare that with what a custom build costs.
  • A dental website platform: a company that builds sites only for practices, from its own designs. It fits when you'd rather hand off the build, but its booking still has to pass the booking test. Dental website design has the questions about booking and your practice software.

Leaving later

Check the exit before you build, because each platform lets a different part of the site leave.

Squarespace exports to WordPress a short list: layout pages, one blog, text and image blocks, and a few more. Product, video and audio blocks stay behind, as do drafts, style settings and custom CSS. You can't export from a trial site at all.

Inside Wix, a new look means a new site, and Wix lets you move your Premium plan and domain to it.

Whatever you pick, register the domain in the practice's own name, so it can point to the next site.

Questions owners ask

Frequently asked questions

Are free dental website templates good enough for a new practice?

A free template can be enough if it passes the same tests as a paid one: tap-to-call, a real booking link, a safe form, a fast phone load and room for a tracking tag. A free template is not a free plan: Squarespace lists code injection on Core, Plus and Advanced, and a free WordPress.com site can't install plugins. Read the plan limits before you pick the look.

Can I switch my dental website template later?

It depends on the platform. On Wix, picking a template and starting to edit it locks it in, so you cannot change it; you can start a new site on another template instead and move your Premium plan and domain to it. WordPress lets you switch themes, though pages built with the old theme's layouts may need rework.

What does a ThemeForest dental theme include?

For an item sold as supported, Envato's item support policy gives six months of support from purchase, extendable up to 12. It excludes help installing the theme on your server or CMS, changes beyond the original features, and hosting problems. The theme is a design file, not a finished site.

Do I need a custom dental website instead of a template?

Only when a test fails and the template platform will not let you fix it. If the booking link, the tag or the form cannot be changed on your plan, that is the reason to pay for custom work. Looks alone are not.

How do I check a dental template's speed?

Paste the demo address into Google's PageSpeed Insights and read the mobile result. A recently published page may lack real-visitor data, Google notes, and the tool then shows the whole site's data or none. The simulated lab test still runs, and it is enough to compare two demos.
