You are pricing Smith.ai for your firm and the price list does not say which plan fits your phone. On its own page the human plans run from $300 to $2,100 a month, and the plan that fits is set by how many billable calls you get.

Quick answer

  • Count last month's answered, missed and after-hours calls before you open a sales call.
  • Compare your count with the plan table below, not with the monthly fee alone.
  • Check the add-ons you need, because several bill per call.
  • Ask how a call's ad source reaches your case system.
  • Confirm refund and cancellation terms in writing.

How many calls will Smith.ai bill me for?

Smith.ai bills per client call, not per minute, and spam and wrong numbers are free while your forwarded lines show the caller's number (caller ID).

So the number you need is real callers, not total rings. Do the count like this:

  1. Open your phone system's call log for last month.
  2. Count calls you answered, calls you missed and calls after hours.
  3. Cross out spam, robocalls and wrong numbers.
  4. Add the rest. That is your billable count.

Calls that go to voicemail are not a saving. Those are the callers the service exists to catch.

Which human plan fits my call count?

Below about 75 calls a month Starter is cheapest, from 75 to 212 Basic is, and from 213 Pro is. These figures come from Smith.ai's human receptionist page and I did the division.

PlanMonthly feeCalls includedPer extra callFee per included call
Starter$30030$11.50$10.00
Basic$81090$10.50$9.00
Pro$2,100300$8.50$7.00
EnterpriseCustomNot statedNot statedNot stated

The last column assumes you use every included call. Unused calls still cost the fee.

To find when the next plan wins, use this formula:

switch point = calls included in the smaller plan + (bigger fee minus smaller fee) / smaller plan's overage

  • Starter to Basic: 30 + (810 - 300) / 11.50 = 74.3. At 74 calls Starter costs $806. At 75 it costs $817.50 against Basic's $810.
  • Basic to Pro: 90 + (2,100 - 810) / 10.50 = 212.9. At 212 calls Basic costs $2,091. At 213 it costs $2,101.50 against Pro's $2,100.

What else lands on the bill?

Most extras bill per call, so each one multiplies by your call count. The page lists these:

Add-onPrice
Conflict checks$0.50 per call
Call recording and transcription$0.25 per call
Book appointments$1.50 per call
Dedicated Spanish line$1.00 per call
Extended intake$1.50 per call
Inbound call tracking numbers$5.00 per number, per month
Additional transfer destinations$15.00 each, per month

New client intake (five short-answer questions), lead qualification and the first CRM connection are listed as free. Each extra CRM costs $0.50 a call.

The same page states no setup fees, month-to-month service and a 10% discount on a 12-month subscription. It also states a 30-day money-back guarantee up to $1,000 that excludes overage, yet its FAQ mentions "the first two weeks." Ask which window applies.

What would one month cost a made-up firm?

Illustrative: every number below is made up for an imaginary employment law practice with four lawyers, and none comes from a client. The plan prices and add-on prices are Smith.ai's published ones; everything else is made up.

The firm forwards 110 calls in a month. Fifteen are spam or wrong numbers with caller ID passing, so 95 are billable.

LineMathCost
Basic plan90 included$810.00
Overage5 x $10.50$52.50
Conflict checks95 x $0.50$47.50
Recording95 x $0.25$23.75
Three tracking numbers3 x $5.00$15.00
Total$948.75

Say the calls produced 22 booked consultations and 6 signed cases. Cost per booked consultation is 948.75 / 22 = $43.13. Cost per signed case is 948.75 / 6 = $158.13.

On Starter the same month would be $300 plus 65 x $11.50, so $1,047.50 before add-ons. Basic wins here.

Should a person or the AI take the calls?

Smith.ai sells live receptionists, an AI receptionist and a mix of the two, and which calls reach a person is your decision. The AI receptionist page is a separate bill, counted by answered call.

PlanFee a monthCalls includedPer extra call
Free$025$3.00
Pro$150, $270 or $50075, 150 or 300$2.50, $2.30 or $2.17
Enterprise$500, $800 or custom300, 500 or 1,000+$2.17, $2.10 or custom

Read each row in order: Pro at $270 includes 150 calls, and each call past 150 costs $2.30. Here every answered call counts by default; known spam numbers are blocked, and spam you flag can come off the bill, up to 10% of a cycle's calls.

The mix is called Hybrid: the AI answers, and live agents take the calls you choose. Its New Client Priority preset hands new client calls to a person and starts from $2.50 a call.

Try any split on your own intake script first; the AI page lists test calls and a Quality Studio for testing before going live.

Is Smith.ai legit, and what do the reviews say?

Most Google results for "smith.ai reviews" are about working there, not about being a customer. G2 and Capterra would not load for me today, so I give no customer ratings.

From Smith.ai's own about page and home page, these are company claims, not audits:

  • It says it was founded in 2015 and has handled 25M+ calls over 11+ years.
  • It says it is trusted by 5,000+ businesses.
  • Aaron Lee is named as founder and CEO.
  • It says it started in Palo Alto, California, and is now fully remote.
  • Its receptionists are said to be based in North America.

Call recordings are deleted after three months. Smith.ai's recording page says you can download any you need to keep before then.

For the duty to supervise a nonlawyer vendor, which each state sets in its own rules, see my legal answering service post.

Does a Smith.ai call keep its ad source?

Not on its own. Smith.ai sells inbound call tracking numbers at $5 a month each, and its help article suggests one number per ad campaign, ad format or platform. It says tracking details appear in each call's summary, but not which details.

The home page names Clio, MyCase, Lawmatics and Filevine among its native integrations. Three of its integration pages say what reaches your system:

ToolWhat Smith.ai's page says it sends
ClioCall summary, caller name, email and phone, call length where it applies
LawmaticsA new or updated contact with post-call summary notes
MyCaseDate and time, caller contact details, inbound or outbound, a call summary

None of the three pages mentions the ad source or the tracking number. Having bought ads myself, I know a call with no source is a call you cannot credit. Ask sales to confirm these by email:

  • Which tracking details each call summary shows.
  • Whether the source or tracking number can reach Clio, Lawmatics or MyCase.
  • An outcome tag on every call: booked, not a fit, no answer.
  • The refund window, and what Enterprise terms say.

Then add a stage in your case system, so a signed case traces back. See law firm CRM and sending CRM outcomes to Google Ads.

Questions owners ask

Frequently asked questions

How much does Smith.ai cost per month for a law firm?

Its human receptionist page lists Starter at $300 for 30 calls, Basic at $810 for 90 and Pro at $2,100 for 300, with Enterprise priced on request ([Smith.ai](https://smith.ai/pricing/receptionists)). Add-ons are extra. Count your own monthly calls first, because overage per call decides the real bill.

Will Smith.ai bill me for spam and wrong numbers?

Not on the human plans, provided the lines you send to Smith.ai show the caller's number: spam, wrong numbers and unsolicited sales calls are then free ([Smith.ai](https://smith.ai/pricing/receptionists)). The AI receptionist bills each call it answers by default. Numbers on its known-spammer list are blocked before it picks up, and spam you flag can come off the bill, capped at 10% of a billing cycle's calls ([Smith.ai](https://smith.ai/pricing/ai-receptionist)).

Can I cancel Smith.ai, and is there a setup fee?

The human plans list no setup fees and no long-term contract, and cancelling bills through the end of the current cycle ([Smith.ai](https://smith.ai/pricing/receptionists)). The AI page says month-to-month with 30 days' notice to cancel ([Smith.ai](https://smith.ai/pricing/ai-receptionist)). The page leaves Enterprise terms out, so ask.

Does Smith.ai work with Clio and Lawmatics?

Yes. Its home page names Clio, MyCase, Lawmatics and Filevine as native integrations ([Smith.ai](https://smith.ai/)). The Clio and Lawmatics pages say each call's summary and the caller's contact details reach your account ([Clio](https://smith.ai/integrates-with/clio), [Lawmatics](https://smith.ai/integrates-with/lawmatics)). Neither mentions the ad source, so ask whether it can be sent.

Can Smith.ai take calls that involve health information?

Its legal page says Smith.ai is not HIPAA-compliant and cannot handle calls involving protected health information ([Smith.ai](https://smith.ai/industries/legal-law-firms-answering-service)). A firm that takes medical calls, for example injury intake, should ask exactly what that means before routing them. I am not a lawyer, so this is not legal advice.
