Avvo for Lawyers: Is a Paid Profile Worth It?

Avvo for lawyers has a free layer and a paid one. Here is how to test, with your own intake numbers, whether Avvo sends signed cases.

Avvo already has a page about you, whether or not you do anything. The question is which parts to claim, which to pay for, and how to prove either brings signed cases; a tagged link, one intake question and a division answer it within 90 days.

The Avvo help and pricing pages quoted here are archived copies dated 2024 to 2026, read alongside Martindale-Avvo's live site. Some of those help articles are years old, so confirm anything you rely on with the rep, in writing.

Quick answer

Claim the profile first and fix what is wrong on it; that costs time, not money. If the profile shows your website link, tag it, add "Avvo" as a fixed choice in your intake script, and wait 90 days before spending. If you do pay, ask the rep the questions at the end, then compare your cost per signed case with your Google Ads figure. Count signed cases, not profile views or clicks.

What is Avvo, and who stands behind it?

Avvo is a lawyer directory with ratings, client reviews and a consumer question forum. Avvo's About page says it "joined Martindale-Avvo in 2018 as part of Internet Brands" (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12), and Martindale-Avvo's press page calls Martindale-Avvo and FindLaw "Internet Brands' legal companies" (Martindale-Avvo, checked 2026-10-12). Martindale-Avvo sells under the Martindale-Hubbell, Avvo, Nolo, Ngage Live Chat, Lawyers.com and Captorra brands (Martindale-Avvo, checked 2026-10-12), so an Avvo rep may quote a package that covers several directories.

Avvo says it fills in basic information for 97% of US attorneys from public data, including state bar and licensing records, court records and attorney websites, and that a lawyer can claim the profile for free (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). It also says it does not remove profiles (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). See also lawyer directories compared and the Martindale-Hubbell rating.

What can you do on Avvo without paying?

To claim, search your name in Avvo's directory, verify your identity through LinkedIn, Facebook, email or phone, follow the confirmation email and set a password (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). Avvo's pricing page lists the free tier, Avvo Starter, as a basic profile with business address, practice areas, an online resume, peer endorsements and client reviews, plus a directory listing and participation in the Q&A forum (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). It does not say which contact details a free profile shows, so after claiming, check whether your phone number and website link appear.

From your dashboard you can email a review request to up to 50 current or former contacts (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). You can post a public reply to a negative review, or ask for Avvo's dispute process if you believe the reviewer was never an actual or potential client; the review stays off your profile while Avvo asks the reviewer to confirm (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). Peer endorsements come from peers such as colleagues, judges and opposing counsel, and you request them from the peer endorsements section of the profile editor (Martindale-Avvo, checked 2026-10-12).

The Q&A forum lets anyone ask an anonymous legal question for free, and only licensed attorneys can answer (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12).

What does the rating measure, and can you change it?

Avvo's help page says the Avvo Rating comes from a model that combines what a lawyer has put on the profile with data from state bars and other licensing bodies, on a scale from 1 (Extreme Caution) to 10 (Superb), and that "attorneys can't pay us to improve their ratings" (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). A number appears only on claimed profiles; an unclaimed profile with no public discipline shows "This attorney is not active on Avvo" instead. Avvo does not publish how it weights each input.

Avvo's page on raising the rating names work experience, awards, legal associations, publications, speaking engagements and peer endorsements, with a cap on endorsement points, and says recent, dated entries count more (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). The same page says client reviews "do not have any effect" on the rating. Avvo does not adjust ratings on request; a lawyer with no discipline who is not seeking clients can ask to hide the number, which also drops them from practice area search results (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12).

In Davis v. Avvo, a New York lawyer who did not pay Avvo alleged that paying lawyers received higher ratings and a "Pro" badge. In December 2018 the federal court in Manhattan dismissed the complaint, holding that the ratings are statements of opinion protected by the First Amendment and that "Pro", read as a mark of skill, is "mere puffery", meaning vague praise that cannot be proven true or false (Davis v. Avvo, 345 F. Supp. 3d 534 (S.D.N.Y. 2018), checked 2026-10-12). The court did not decide whether paying changes a rating. Avvo's own page says it does not; ask the rep to confirm in writing for the product you buy.

Which Avvo options exist, and what can you track on each?

Avvo's pricing page asks you to contact sales for ProVantage pricing, while Martindale-Avvo's pricing page lists ProVantage "Starting at $399/mo. for first user" and every other package as pricing on request (Martindale-Avvo, checked 2026-10-12). The AdVantage page says ads start "at just $5" without saying per click, per contact or per month (Martindale-Avvo, checked 2026-10-12). Avvo Pro, a subscription plan named in the 2018 opinion, is not on Avvo's 2025 pricing page; if a rep uses that name, ask what it includes now.

ProVantage reporting is from its product page (checked 2026-10-12). If a rep names a product that is not in this table, such as Pay-Per-Lead, add a row for it before you sign.

How do you measure Avvo on its own?

Three small pieces do it, with no special software. First, if your profile shows a website link, add UTM tags to it. UTM tags are labels at the end of a web address that tell Google Analytics 4 (GA4) where a visit came from, for example ?utm_source=avvo&utm_medium=directory; GA4 then lets you filter sessions by that source.

Second, add "Avvo" as a fixed option in the "how did you hear about us" question your intake staff asks, so it is not typed from memory (how to build that intake question).

Third, the phone. Avvo's advertising page says paid ads can carry unique tracking numbers by area, practice area and ad message, and that contact history by date, time, type and source can be downloaded (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12); a 2018 help article shows a "contact tracking number" next to your own number in the profile editor (Avvo, archived, checked 2026-10-12). Whether you may put your own call tracking number on the profile instead is not stated on any page I could load. Ask, and until the answer is in writing, match Avvo's contact export against your intake log.

Run 90 days and note four things each month: visits tagged Avvo, calls and messages that name Avvo, consultations held, and cases signed.

What does a paid quarter look like in numbers?

Illustrative: I made up every figure in this quarter for a fictional two-lawyer family law practice; none of them belongs to a client.

Avvo placementGoogle Ads
Spend over 90 days$4,500$9,000
Calls and messages3060
Consultations held1220
Cases signed35
Cost per signed case$1,500$1,800

Cost per signed case is spend divided by signed cases: $4,500 divided by 3 is $1,500 for Avvo, and $9,000 divided by 5 is $1,800 for Google Ads. Avvo looks cheaper here, but three cases is a tiny sample, and one case more or fewer swings it a lot. The decision rule I would use: keep it for another quarter only if the cost per signed case is at or below your other paid source and the case value covers it.

For context, Google Ads Keyword Planner estimates for the US, October 2026, put "family lawyer near me" at an average of $30.12 per click, with a top-of-page range of $3.22 to $32.05. That is a US-wide estimate, not what a firm will pay.

What rules touch paying for a directory?

ABA Model Rule 7.2(b)(1) lets a lawyer "pay the reasonable costs of advertisements or communications permitted by this Rule" (ABA, archived, checked 2026-10-12), and Comment [3] lists "on-line directory listings" among those costs (ABA, archived, checked 2026-10-12). If a rep sells leads rather than placement, Comment [5] allows paying a lead generator only if it does not recommend the lawyer and the payment is consistent with Rules 1.5(e) on dividing fees and 5.4 on a lawyer's independence.

Your state's version of these rules is the one that binds you, and it may differ from the ABA model. I am not a lawyer, and none of this is legal advice. For the wider picture, see attorney advertising rules.

Canada: Avvo is a US directory, and each provincial law society sets its own marketing rule. In Ontario, Rule 4.2-1 allows marketing only if it is "demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable," and its commentary says rankings and third-party endorsements breach the rule when they are "conferred in part as a result of the payment of a fee" (Law Society of Ontario, archived, checked 2026-10-12).

What should you ask the Avvo rep before signing?

  • What is the product's exact name (ProVantage, AdVantage, Pay-Per-Lead or something else), its price and term, and does it renew automatically? Martindale-Avvo's FAQ says many attorneys have annual contracts, while Pay-Per-Lead can be stopped at any time (Martindale-Avvo, checked 2026-10-12).
  • What counts as a lead, a click or an impression, who decides, and what does the $5 in "ads starting at just $5" buy?
  • Does any paid product change my rating, badge or position? Answer in writing.
  • May the profile carry my own tracking number and a tagged website link, and can I download the full contact history, with the data behind each lead, to match it to my intake records?
  • If I cancel, what happens to my reviews, endorsements and contact details? Avvo says it does not remove profiles, so the page stays either way.

Keep the answers with your contract. An answer of "not stated" still tells you what you cannot measure.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Avvo profile free?

The basic layer is. Avvo says a lawyer can claim their profile for free, and its pricing page lists a free tier, Avvo Starter, with a basic profile, client reviews, peer endorsements, a directory listing and Q&A participation. ProVantage profiles and advertising are paid.

How much does Avvo cost?

Avvo's own pricing page asks you to contact sales for ProVantage pricing. Martindale-Avvo's pricing page lists ProVantage starting at $399 a month for the first user and puts every other package on request. Get the quote, the term and the renewal rule in writing.

Does paying Avvo raise my Avvo Rating?

Avvo's help page says attorneys cannot pay to improve their ratings, which come from profile information and public licensing data. A federal court dismissed a 2018 lawsuit claiming otherwise, holding that the ratings are protected opinion, without deciding whether payment mattered. Ask the rep to confirm in writing for the product you buy.

Who owns Avvo?

Internet Brands. Avvo's About page says Avvo joined Martindale-Avvo in 2018 as part of Internet Brands, and Martindale-Avvo's press page names Martindale-Avvo and FindLaw as Internet Brands' legal companies.

How do I know whether Avvo sends me clients?

Tag the website link on your profile so Google Analytics shows Avvo visits, add Avvo as a fixed choice in the intake question about how someone heard of you, and count signed cases that came from it over 90 days. If you advertise, download Avvo's contact history and match it to intake. Divide what you paid Avvo by those signed cases and compare that to your cost per signed case from other sources.

Can a lawyer pay for Avvo advertising under the ethics rules?

ABA Model Rule 7.2(b)(1) lets a lawyer pay the reasonable costs of advertisements or communications the rule permits, and Comment [3] lists on-line directory listings among those costs. Every state adopts its own wording of the rule, so read your state's text; I am not a lawyer and this answer is not legal advice.
